Don’t laugh ok.
Maybe I’m not as smart as some of you people out there in blog land, but in the last hour or so I’ve been learning some new words. I’m guessing being a UNI student does that!
Thought I’d share them with you, just in case you cared!
e tour d’horizon: review, survey (of a situation)
antecedent: a preceding circumstance, event, object, style, phenomenon, etc.
civilisatrice: the ‘Civilising’ mission. ie. The “mission civilisatrice” – French Colonisation in Africa.
deplorable: causing or being a subject for grief or regret; lamentable.
tautological: needless repetition of an idea, esp. in words other than those of the immediate context, without imparting additional force or clearness
nascent: beginning to exist or develop; in the process of birth; incipient, not mature
And a quote for you, from a guy called C. P. Snow in 1959:
”Life for the overwhelming majority of mankind has always been nasty, brutish and short. It is so in the poor countries still. This disparity between the rich and the poor has been noticed. It has been noticed, most acutely and not unnaturally, by the poor. Just because they have noticed it, it won’t last for long. Whatever else in the world we know survives to the year 2000, that won’t. Once the trick of getting rich is known, as it now is, the world can’t survive half rich and half poor. It’s just not on.”
I agree, this whole poverty thing, ”It’s just not on.”
